Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When is the new EPA rule coming into effect?

The EPA rule on amalgam waste will take effect from July 14th, 2017. Established dental offices will have to comply from July 14th, 2020, whereas all new dental offices have to comply immediately.

What is required by the new EPA rule on amalgam?

All dental offices that place or remove amalgam will have to install an ISO 11143 certified amalgam separator like the amalsed Silver. They are also required to follow two Best Management Practices. The first one states that it is prohibited to flush waste amalgam into any drain, while the second requires dental offices to only use line cleaners with a pH between 6 and 8. We recommend to use our Silver Service Amalgam Waste Containers to recycle all waste amalgam in your dental office.

What does medentex offer to assist in compliance?

The medentex Silver Service provides 100% compliance with the EPA rule. The amalsed Silver amalgam separator surpasses the requirements with its 99.7% separation efficiency. The medentex Amalgam Waste Containers make use of a proven mercury vapor suppressant to provide a maximum level of health and safety. All medentex products include free recycling, certification, and return shipment!

Will the amalsed Silver fit on my vacuum system?

The amalsed Silver can be installed into most any existing or new vacuum system. Please consult our user manual for the product's dimensions so that you can clear an appropriate area for installation.

How do I know when to replace the amalsed Silver cartridge?

medentex has designed replacement cycles customized to the size of your office. Dental offices with 1-4 chairs replace their cartridge once a year, while dental offices with 5-10 chairs replace it twice a year in six month intervals. Offices with 11 or more chairs should contact a medentex representative for a bespoke solution.

How long does it take to install the amalsed Silver system?

Installation will take about an hour and can be performed by any dental technician or plumber.

How do I send back my full Amalgam Waste Containers and amalsed Silver cartridge?

Close your Amalgam Waste Containers tightly and place them inside the Silver Service Box in their designated hole in the protective foam. Detach and seal the amalsed Silver as per the instructions in the Replacement Manual and place it into it's designated hole in the box. Close the Silver Service Box and affix the pre-paid UPS shipment label. Contact UPS to schedule a pick up.

When should I expect to receive my Notification of Receipt?

After your Silver Service Box arrives at our offices, your Notification will be generated and sent to your office in 2 to 3 weeks.

Can I purchase the amalsed Silver amalgam separator or Amalgam Waste Containers alone without the Silver Service package?

The amalsed Silver cartridge can be purchased outside of the Silver Service package. We also offer additional Amalgam Waste Containers for single purchase. If you contact us, one of our recycling experts will recommend the Amalgam Waste Container to best fit your office and all Silver Service customers will receive a loyalty discount as our way of saying thank you!
